The Automobile Tax


The editorial I chose this week is entitled “Automobile Tax – Equity issues outweigh lost revenue.” The article reveals that this tax brings in more than fifteen million dollars to the municipal treasury each year. This tax places the honest taxpayers in a bind where the collection rate of the tax is 75%.
Dallas’ city council members decided to get rid of in favor of a higher property tax. This decision would result in a temporary loss of revenue to the city. The members feel that the long-term plan will “outweigh the temporary loss.”

Critique Page

I believe the editorial entitled “Automobile Tax – Equity issues outweigh lost revenue” is hitting the nail right on the head. I know that I personally dislike having to pay additional taxes on vehicles that I buy. I’m always buying lesser of a vehicle because I have to save that additional three to four hundred dollars for tax, title, and license. I believe that taxes should only be paid once, at the purchasing of the vehicle brand new. Repeatedly paying the state taxes on a vehicle that in essence is just changing ownership is absolute ludicrous. I also know that the state depends on this incoming revenue. I believe that the council members are correct in raising property taxes, as it would save citizens money in the long run.
