The Effects of Steroids in Baseball

Jose Canseco once said, “The national past-time is juiced”. The use of steroids has greatly impacted the game of baseball forever. Steroids can have a huge effect on an athletes overall performance. In baseball, the testing for steroids and consequences for using steroids is not perfect and needs to be changed. Some people, including many athletes, believe the Major League Baseball (MLB) policy is fine and does not need to be stricter.
Drugs such as steroids are used in a vast amount of sports, most notably baseball. Steroids increase ones muscle mass and strength. In baseball this is key because more strength can lead to more hits and home runs along with faster pitched balls. ...

Probably one of the worst parts of steroids is the negative effect it has on the body. For men these effects include acne, hair loss, testicular atrophy, and “roid rage”. In woman steroids can cause irreversible masculinization including voice deepening. For both men and woman steroids cause an increase in the risk of liver and heart disease, and sterility. Simply the effects steroids have on the body should make the MLB want to crack down on its testing and policies alone for this substance, let alone the disadvantage it gives athletes using the drug.
With all the effects steroids have shown above, the MLB has banned steroids and done some testing for steroids and established penalties for using them. In 2003 the MLB conducted an anonymous drug test, which showed a large number of players using illegal performance-enhancing drugs. This test led to lots of criticism of the MLB and its drug policy.
