The Most Dangerous Game, written in 1924 by Richard Connell is a thrilling short story that shows how people adapt to survive in different situations. The main character, Sanger Rainsford finds himself trapped on a desolate island with a demented Cossack general named Zaroff. Rainsford and Zaroff are both hunters; however, Zaroff hunts a different animal - one that can fight back- humans. Social Darwinism is the belief that humanity is part of evolution and natural selection. Populations, social order, and individuals will flourish or perish depending on who is strong. Connell sums it up in the following quote:

Life is for the strong, to be lived by the strong, and if needs be, taken by the strong. The weak of the world were put here to give the strong pleasure. I am strong. Why should I not use my gift? If I wish to hunt, why should I not? (Connell)

This quote helps the reader understand how Zaroff feels about humanity and how he envisions the world should be. He was born an elite aristocrat who feels entitled. “The weak in the world to pleasure” (Connell) shows that he believes that the strong have control over the weak.
