On September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked four airlines and used them as weapons against the United States. Two were flown into the north and south towers of the World Trade Center, ultimately causing their complete collapse; a third was crashed into the Pentagon, causing substantial damage; and a fourth was crashed into the ground in Pennsylvania after passengers, realizing what was happening elsewhere, tried to take the plane back. They prevented an attack on a fourth target, probably in the Washington, D. C. area. After ousting the government of Afghanistan, our government turned its attention to Iraq. While none of the terrorists were Iraqi, the government argued that they were producing weapons of mass destruction. There was great concern that these weapons might be sold to terrorists.
