First we invaded Afghanistan and forced out the government that had tolerated and even welcomed them, at least partly because al-Qaeda’s leader Osama bin Laden had helped Afghanistan repel an invasion by Russia and partly because bin Laden is extremely wealthy and gave the country a lot of money in return for locating many of his terrorist training camps within their borders.
After ousting the government of Afghanistan, our government turned its attention to Iraq. While none of the terrorists were Iraqi, the government argued that they were producing weapons of mass destruction. There was great concern that these weapons might be sold to terrorists. That government, too, was ousted.
