with Janie's goal for independence. One day the couple gets into an argument after Logan buys her a mule and threatens to kill Janie if she doesn't do more work on the farm. While Logan is away from home she runs off with a man named Joe Starks, who promises her more prosperous and independent life with him in Eatonville, Florida.
When Janie arrives in Florida, Joe Starks Gets elected as mayor of Eatonville and sets up a general store, which is run by Janie. Janie doesn't mind her job as she loves Joe. As time goes on Joe starts imposing rules on her, she isn't allowed to speak her mind to Joe, she isn't allowed to attend public events or associate with the townspeople, and she is made to wear a head rag to cover her hair so the men of the town can't see it. Joe's oppression sparks resent towards him in Janie. After a few years, Janie doesn't make Joe's dinner to his liking and he hits her because of it.
