The result of this was unusual, normally when the country is in a national crisis they get mad at the government leading to distrust towards government. For example, in Hurricane Katrina, the lack of help led to distrust towards the government (Bullard).
A vivid depiction of history repeating itself is simply stated by Cicero in 55 BC, “The budget should be balanced, the treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, and the arrogance of officialdom should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must again learn to work instead of living on public assistance.” If you switch the U.S. for Rome in that quote, I think we have a match for today.
