Each year millions of teens across the country graduate high school and prepare to go to college. Each year thousands of college students get in trouble with the law for underage drinking. Now, can this problem be solved? Many believe lowering the drinking age will do just that. In the article by John M. McCardell “What Your College President Didn’t Tell You,” he establishes a stand to lower the drinking age from 18 to 21. McCardell, a very respected retired president emeritus of Middlebury College, he has been around the college lifestyle to be creditable on this topic. Although McCardell brings up logical points why the drinking age should be lowered, the debate has gone on too far. ...

The other issue is that of the 21-year-old drinking age law. The latter of those two is the one that has really taken off his career and fame. Since this article, McCardell has established organizations to protest the drinking-age and give evidence why it should be changed. So what really is his stand on the issue? McCardell states,

“To lawmakers: the 21-year-old drinking age is bad social policy and terrible law. It is astonishing that college students have thus far acquiesced in so egregious an abridgement of the age of majority. Unfortunately, this acquiescence has taken the form of binge drinking. Campuses have become, depending on the enthusiasm of local law enforcement, either arms of the law of havens from the law,” (1).

He has created somewhat of the Battle of the Binge. By lowering the drinking age to 18 he believes this would significantly reduce the harmful effects among students with their alcohol consumption.

Two months after his retirement he released this article in the New York Times. He states, “Now a less vulnerable member of the faculty once more, I dare to unburden myself of a few observations,” (McCardell 1). He had the opportunity in a powerful office. However, he did not do anything about it while he could.
