World War One Poetry Comparison

Wilfred Owen uses similes and metaphors in ‘Dulce Et Decorum Est’ to express his feelings of anger towards war. Brooke describes the soldiers as ‘Bent double, like old beggars under sacks.’ This simile gave the image of men who have lost their dignity at war, who are so weak they can barely carry their own heavy packs. Owen wrote this way to describe the true realities of war and to inform people who had not been to war what soldiers truly had to go through.

After the war, during the aftermath phase, strong feelings of anger and hate were shown in poems such as Wilfred Owen’s ‘Dulce Et Decorum Est’ when Owen expressed how awful war is for the soldiers and showed his anger towards the generals and politicians who hadn’t experience war but still sent soldiers out to fight.
