Humanities impart in us a set of values that help us recognize continuity from the past to the present, to reason in order to understand human experience, to question the values dimension of human enterprise and to articulate results from thoughts, in an intellectual, historical and social context. For example, investigating a branch of philosophy might get you thinking about ethical questions, learning another language helps us gain an appreciation for the similarities in different cultures, which promotes communication. Reading a book that highlights a point in a different light will help us weigh our opinions and put into practice the refined, balanced conclusion we derive. Learning about history will give us a better understanding of the past, while at the same time give us a clearer picture of what the future holds.
