Benefits of Exercise

It is known that regular exercise is one of the most beneficial important things you can do for one’s well-being. Not only does exercise reduce one’s risk of cardiovascular disease, it also improves one’s mental health and mood. For instance, heart disease and stroke are the leading causes of death. However, with moderate physical activity, one can lower their blood pressure and improve cholesterol levels. In addition, exercise can reduce risk of developing type 2 diabetes and lowers the risk of two types of cancer: colon and breast. Regular exercise aids in our thinking and learning skills. influenced mood changes. Forty participants were assigned to either exercise or non-exercise conditions where mood change was measured with the Incredibility Short Profile of Mood states. Participants were to complete a ten minute jogging session and were asked to assess their mood whereas the non-exercise group were assigned a ten minute cognitive task. Results of this study indicated that even ten minutes of exercise can beneficially impact one’s mood. It was concluded that “individuals’ perception of mood enhancement can be augmented by reconstructive memory biases, suggesting that expectations regarding the benefits of exercise are crucial for maximizing perceived mood enhancement. (Anderson, 2010)”
