Clostridium difficle is a rod shaped gram positive bacteria.
Clostridium difficile is anaerobic and also a spore former, which allows it
to live in the environment for months until it is orally transmitted into
its host. Clostridium difficile causes psuedomembranous colitis, and
antibiotic associated colitis. It produces three toxins Cytotoxin or toxin
B which causes cell death, Enterotoxin or toxin A that causes cellular
damage and inflammation of the colon, and a third toxin causing increased
myoelectric activity in the colon, which causes diarrhea.

however some cases were noted to start after antibiotic therapy
had been discontinued. The antibiotics that cause clostridium difficle to
release the toxins that cause psuedomembranous colitis are clindamycin,
ampicillian, cephalosporins, pennicillans, erythromycin, sulfamethoxazole,
chlorampheniocol, and tetracycline. Psuedomembranous colitis often affects
the rectosigmoid section of the colon and occasionally can occur in the
proximal segments of the colon. The sign of psuedomembranous colitis is
severe abdominal pain. Symptoms of psuedomembranous colitis are can be as
mild as the loosing of stool to the active colitis and bloody diarrhea.
There are other symptoms that just bloody diarrhea, these include: visible
mucus in some diarrhea, high white blood cell counts, dehydration,
hypotension, toxic megacolon, and diminished albumen.
