Education is supposed to be about knowledge – discovering it, learning it, and sharing it. To consider how to manage the knowledge that educational professionals use is to consider how to better manage their ongoing training and collegial brainstorming.
Teachers usually have some input or contact with each of the three main components of knowledge management. Unfortunately, this type of sharing has “largely been unsuccessful, primarily because people have difficulty figuring out how to use these tools to solve meaningful problems, or how to locate other people for assistance” (Reiser-Dempsey, p 159). A better way of sharing has been through communities of practice, which “. . . facilitate collaboration by enabling people with similar interests, needs, and responsibilities to work together across time and distance” (Reiser-Dempsey, p 159).
