There are many people in the world who enjoy a clean living environment. They polish and clean often enough that unannounced visitors do not fluster them in the least. They are known in their social setting for keeping a clean home and they are not comfortable when things get messed up. However, enjoying and keeping a clean living environment is not the same thing as becoming compulsive about it. are concerned are not fully understood at this time but scientists do know it has a bearing on the desire and need to fulfill a compulsive desire. The learning perspective is what happens when the compulsion is followed. If one feels extremely uncomfortable unless one keeps cleaning and the cleaning makes the discomfort fade then the person is developing a learned process. They are teaching themselves that the cleaning is removing the discomfort and it reinforces the need to continue the ritual of constant cleaning. The biological aspect triggers the initial events and the learned perspective and reward for the behavior strengthen the need for the compulsion to be followed.

The treatment for this type behavior is often two-fold. Medications are often introduced to blunt or block the chemical imbalance that triggers the desire or belief that the person must continue to clean.
