Across the United States, issues about whether or not gay marriage should be recognized has caused a lot of commotion. Not only issues dealing with marriage, but serving openly in the military, and having or adopting children. Within the past 5 years or so gay rights activists have fought hard to get where they are today. Now, being able to serve for our country and be open with their sexuality, along with same sex marriages being recognized in a number of states. When it comes to physically having children there are no laws as to who can and can’t get pregnant. So what people try to do during custody battles, is use their spouses change in sexuality as a way to convince that they are an unfit parent. How is that so? How is it fair that someone who is/was such a good parent to their own child when they were straight, but when they become openly gay/lesbian that automatically changes their quality of parenting. Like stated in adoption case that ended up going to court “…A parents sexual orientation or sexual practices are presumptively irrelevant.” (Patterson 2009) Which is exactly the way I believe it should be, a persons sexual preference shouldn’t change whether they are/aren’t a fit parent.
Another major concern with gay parenting is the effect, if any it could have on the children. “It has sometime been suggested that gender development may be compromised among children reared by lesbian or gay parents.” (Patterson 1992) Some are drawn to believe that having same-sex parents will mess up the child’s gender ...
