The Black Death

The Black Death destroyed one third of Europe's population thousands of years ago. It was one of the most important historical events of the medieval time. The plague started in Europe in 1328 and lasted until 1351 (Black Death). The symptoms of the Black Death consisted of blackening of the skin and large lumps called buboes. The buboes were red at first and then turned purple and black. The victim's blood would soon turn black and the smell had a vile smell (Black Death). suggests "the Black Death was caused by an infection in the air or water" (Venette 379). As a result of his theory, the Jews were charged for infecting wells and the air. Many Christians burned and killed thousands of Jews for allegedly spreading the disease. Although it could be argued the disease traveled by air and water, the Black Death was actually transported by insects and rats (Black Death). The symptoms of the Black Death were swelling beneath the armpits and groins (Tura 380-1). The Black Death was fatal if one was diagnosed, as victims would simply fall over while talking. So many people died, large pits were dug and bodies were left to decay. As ditches would fill, more were dug and replenished with additional corpses (Tura 381).
