The Social Democratic Party

Following its inception in 1875, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) formed a successful opposition to the prevailing autocratic government under Otto von Bismarck. So popular was the SDP that Bismarck banned party meetings and publications entirely from 1878 to 1890. However, SDP membership and sentiments flourished in pre-war Germany and in 1912 the SDP retained 110 seats in the Reichstag. Prominent party members like Ferdinand Bebel, Karl Kautsky, Friedrich Ebert, and Eduard Bernstein helped make the SDP the largest political party in Germany prior to the First World War. Ebert became the chairman of the SDP and originally supported German involvement in World War I.

At the helm of the USDP was Kurt Eisner, who successfully overthrew the Bavarian government and declared Bavaria a Socialist Republic based on sound democratic ideals. Eisner's original support of World War One waned as he and other left-wing socialists realized that German involvement was motivated by undemocratic and certainly antisocialist ideals. The loud voices of the socialists during World War One provided a vocal opposition to imperialistic and autocratic trends in the German government. Although support for the SDP diminished due to splintering within the socialist movement, the SDP probably constituted some of the only sane political opposition to autocracy in central Europe.
