Thousands of people were employed by and factories were all over the south. The cigarette-making process, once done entirely by hand, either in these factories or by the consumer, is today fully automated. Automation is a part of the cigarette process from the first step to the last. From inspecting to wrapping, machines do the jobs more efficiently. A line of machines in a factory produces from 8,000 to 14,000 cigarettes a minute. The ordering cylinder is the next step in the automation process. Here steam, heat and/or water depending on the brand and quality of the crop is applied. This conditioning process helps to make the tobacco easier to handle while reducing breakage. Impurities, such as sand or small leaves, are filtered out from the batches using shakers and screens. The finer screening is done by a series of desanding shakers. These provide not just cleaning but a final separation also.
The next stop is the Searching Department where a human eye finally comes in contact with the tobacco. Here, off-colored leaves, foreign materials and damaged tobacco are removed from the batch.
