To begin, gender roles in regards to women in the workforce have progressed for the better over the decades. In the early 18[th] century women had no rights and no power. The women's place in society during this era was at home doing domesticated duties. For instance, in 1848, the first public demand for equal treatment of women and voting rights was implemented with the signing of the Declaration of Sentiments. In 1869, these rights were continually demanded through the National Woman Suffrage Association and amended to the Constitution by the familiar historical names, Susan B. In 1967, President Lyndon Johnson's Affirmative Action policy of 1965 was expanded to cover discrimination based on gender to ensure that women as well as minorities enjoyed the same educational and employment opportunities as white males. All of this was initiated when President John Kennedy appointed Eleanor Roosevelt as chairwoman of the President's Commission on the Status of Women.
Additionally, the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) originally drafted by Alice Paul (an attorney as well as a women's right advocate) in 1923, was passed by Congress in 1972, almost fifty years later and then sent to the states for ratification.
