High cholesterol is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease. High cholesterol leads to deposits of cholesterol in arteries. These deposits can harden into plaque in arteries, called atherosclerosis. When this occurs in coronary arteries, the blood and oxygen supply to the heart decreases. This leads to angina and damage to cardiac tissues that is irreversible and can lead to a fatal heart attack.Different tactics on lowering cholesterol work for different patients.
